What Music to Use

Sources for Music

  • You may have in mind songs you love and want to sing that are possible for your program. Make a list with notes about keys, style, language and such.

  • Examine cd disks for ideas.

  • Research books of repertoire lists to stimulate your imagination.

  • Look for new music that fits your theme. Contact music publishers for brochures of American composers’ works, and then ask for perusal copies of those that look intriguing.

  • Investigate securing funds to commission a composition for a work with particular qualities, perhaps creating a 50 minute "song cycle" on the progression from emotions such as anger to peace, or sadness to serenity.

Weaving the Connective Narration

  • Connecting the songs with narration that give insight to the next selection facilitates the listener’s quicker and deeper grasp of the music and text.

  • You may choose to select poems and letters that connect your songs and carry the plot forward.

  • If you don’t feel comfortable writing narration, this is an opportunity to partner with a writer or poet.
