Andrew Skoog

Tenor

Skoog's handling of the murderously high
tenor phrases in "Olim lacus colueram" could
not have been done better. This was no
falsetto crooning, but full-bodied tone." Carmina Burana

Biography: (As of 2/15/2005

Andrew Skoog, tenor, returns to Carnegie Hall with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as soloist in Carmina Burana in April. Critics hail him as ideal in Carmina Burana with his full, lyric delivery of the demanding, high tessitura of this work which he sang last year as guest artist for Sam Houston State University in Texas. This was preceded by the symphonies of Baton Rouge, Midland-Odessa, Victoria, and Toledo.
In demand for orchestral engagements, Skoog made his debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra singing the Mozart Requiem and returned for the Beethoven Symphony No. 9. Other engagements for the Beethoven include the Texas symphonies of Corpus Christi, East Texas, and Victoria. Skoog is recognized for his moving performances of the Evangelist in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, which he sang most recently with the Midland-Odessa Symphony. Sought after for the Messiah, he has presented this work in New York’s Carnegie Hall and throughout the Southwest.
Othe orchestral performances include the Bruckner Te Deum and Mozart Coronation Mass with the Canterbury Choral Society, the Verdi Requiem with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Rossini Stabat Mater with Midland-Odessa Symphony and Rossini’s Petite Mass and Beethoven’s Christ on the Mount of Olives in Dallas. Last May Mr. Skoog was the tenor soloist in Elijah with the Choral Society of Durham.

Mr. Skoog’s passionate, artistic performances of Benjamin Britten works are attracting attention, with praise for his recent performances of the Canticles in Tyler and Canticle No. 2 (Abraham and Isaac) with the Opera Project (Dallas) with reprisals in Knoxville. As song repertoire is ideal for his deep expressivity, recitals and concerts abound in his schedule. This spring he is featured in the James Agee Festival.

Mr. Skoog’s opera debut was with Des Moines Metro Opera, performing the title role of Werther in Massenet's Werther, The Prince in Prokofiev's The Love of Three Oranges, and Mr. Erlanson in Sondheim's A Little Night Music in the apprentice artists' concert series. Additionally he sang in the ensembles in the main stage productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Sweeney Todd, and The Ballad of Baby Doe. He has appeared as Sam Polk in Susannah, Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance, Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) with the Lyric Opera of San Antonio., and Alfred for a semi-staged production of Die Fledermaus with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. He was featured in concert, singing arias from La Traviata and Madama Butterfly with the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Skoog is a two-time Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Regional Finalist, winning the Arkansas District (Little Rock) and the Western Tennessee District (Memphis). He was also a Finalist in the prestigious Dallas Opera Career Development Program Auditions. Last season he debuted with Knoxville Opera as Pong in Turandot.

Reviews:

Elijah, "Obadiah" and "Ahab", Chorale Society of Durham, May, 2004

"As Obadiah and Ahab…displaying a light but refined voice that complemented Sylvan's instrument admirably. The exchanges involving, Skoog and the choir were literally hair-raising - and here, as throughout the evening, one could hardly have expected better diction and projection or more precise and responsive dynamics." John W. Lambert, CLASSICAL VOICE NORTH CAROLINA, 5/6/04

Stabat Mater (Rossini), Midland-Odessa Symphony, November, 2002

"The outstanding soloists were wonderfully suited...Tenor Andrew Skoog presented the opening aria and easily conveyed the soaring melodic line to the audience." Grace Osadchuk, MIDLAND REPORTER, 11/12

Carmina Burana, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, March 1999

"Skoog's handling of the murderously high tenor phrases in "Olim lacus colueram" could not have been done better. This was no falsetto crooning, but full-bodied tone." David Coco, STATE TIMES/MORNING ADVOCATE, 3/13/99

Die Fledermaus, "Alfred", East Texas Symphony Orchestra, January, 1997

"Of note were the performances of Fincher...and Andrew Skoog [as Alfred]. Not only was Skoog able to lay it on thick, but his singing voice was also strong." Kevin Kelley, TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH, 1/27/97
